Galeria Plazita Presents: Threads of Identity: The Art Of Folklorico Attire
Watsonville Arts
byYesenia MolinaonSeptember 28, 2026

For almost 46 years, Esperanza del Valle has been bringing dance, cultura, and community together through folklórico. One of the longest-standing adult dance groups in our community, Esperanza del Valle started with a group of young and enthusiastic teachers who wanted to learn and engage more deeply with their students, their families, and their culture.

What started as a group of educators wanting to connect more with their students quickly grew into something much bigger. Esperanza del Valle began welcoming the larger Mexican diaspora, creating a space for people to reconnect with their raíces through dance and learn from Janet Johns and a variety of master dancers, maestros who traveled from Mexico to share their knowledge and traditions.

Over the years, generations of dancers have learned the dances, music, stories, and traditions of different regions of Mexico. And while we often think of folklórico through the movement of the dancers, there is another important piece of the story that deserves its own spotlight: el vestuario.

This fall, Esperanza del Valle is bringing that story to the Watsonville Center for the Arts with Hilos de Identidad: El Arte del Vestuario Folklórico.

This exhibition is a first for Esperanza del Valle and features 15 vestuarios, presented through both photography and garments displayed on mannequins. The goal is to give the community an opportunity to see these pieces up close y personal—to really look at the fabrics, colors, embroidery, details, and every stitch that goes into creating them.

Because these are more than just costumes.

Each vestuario carries a connection to a place, a people, a tradition, and a history. The fabrics, colors, patterns, and techniques help tell the story of the region and the dances they represent. There is knowledge woven into every piece, and that knowledge has been gathered, learned, preserved, and passed down through generations.

For Esperanza del Valle, sharing these vestuarios with the community is also about sharing what they have learned throughout nearly five decades of dancing. It is about making that knowledge accessible and inviting people to take a closer look at something they may have seen many times before, but perhaps never had the chance to truly see.

Hilos de Identidad invites us to look beyond the steps and movements of folklórico and explore the threads that connect dance to cultura, memoria, identidad, and community.

And on October 10, the vestuarios won't just be sitting on mannequins—they'll be taking center stage.

Join us at 6 PM for the opening reception, followed by a 7 PM fashion show, where dancers will bring these beautiful pieces to life and give us the chance to experience the artistry and history behind each one.

Come celebrate, learn, and admire the work that goes into keeping these traditions alive. Porque cada hilo cuenta una historia.

The exhibition will be on view at the Watsonville Center for the Arts through November 21.

Opening Reception: October 10, 6-8pm | 7pm Fashion Show
Exhibition Dates: September 28–November 21
